Divya Desa Mangalasasanam
 Thiru Thanjai Maamanikoil   -  DD022
Nootrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi Pasuram
( Pillai Perumal Iyengar)

Azhwars have done Mangalasasanam for some Divya Desams very elaborately. For example all 11 Azhwars have sung in praise of Srirangam( Divya Desam 1), Ten Azhwars have sung in praise of Thiruvengadam ( Divya Desam 75) and Thiruparkadal ( Divya Desam 107). Managasasanam to as many as 67 Divydesams  was done by one of the eleven Azhwars only

Mangalasasanam depending on how elaborate it is, covered the one or more of following aspects

  • Name of Divya desam directly or in a subtle way
  • Name of Emperuman directly or in a subtle way
  • Manobhavam of Azhwar who composed the pasuram
  • References to events , Leelas in Vibhava Avatars
  • References to Para, Vyuha and Antharyami forms of Sriman Narayana
  • References to 26 Thatwams ( Paramatma, Jeevatma, Moola Prakruthi, Mahaan, Ahankaaram, Manasu, Kaalam Five each of elements, attributes,  Indriyas and Senses)
  • Divya Desa Vimana, Pushkarini etc
  • Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings
Per Request from Parasura Rishi, Lord Sriman Narayana demolished three demons Thanjagan, Thandagan and Tharakaasuran who were posing threats to Parasura Rishi and his yagna. Sriman Narayana has taken Archavatar of Neelamegha Perumal in Thiru Thanjai Divya Desam, Manikundra Perumal in Thiru Manikundram Divya Desam and Veera Narsimha Perumal in Thiru Thanjayali Divya Desam.

All thre Three Divya Desams are treated as one Divyadesam and Thirumangai and Peyazhwar have done Mangalasasanam to all three.

The pasuram presented below is by Pillai Perumal Iyengar, who was a sishya of Paarasar Bhattar. Pillai Perumal Iyengar  had composed Ashta( eight) Prabhandhams. One of them is Notrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi which had one pasuram each for each of the 108 Divya Desams.

In this Pasuram Perumal Pillai Iyengar performs Mangalasasanam to the Lord of Thiru Thanjai. Perumal Pillai Iyengar advices his mind and says " Oh my mind! Please listen to my advice. This advice would benefit you. There is better solution  that will serve my cause. Both of us can profit and prosper from this advice. That advice is please focus, love and surrender to the emerald like Lord of Thiru Thanjai Divya Desam and Pay tributes and sing the glory  of Panchaydhams ( Conch, Discus, Bow, Sword and Mace), Kausthubam and Mahalakshmi on the body of the Lord of Thiru Thanjai."

The pasuram presented below by Thirumangai Azhwar (Parakalan)  is  the Sarngam (bow) amsam of Srimana Narayana. He holds the distinction of having sung the most number of pasurams than the rest of the Azhwars. Also Thirumangai Azhwar has performed Mangalasasanam at 86 Divya Desams, the maximum by any Azhwar.

In this pasuram  "பொன்னிவர் மேனி மரக
தத்தின் பொங்கிளஞ் சோதி", Thirumangai
Azhwar performs Mangalasasanam to the Lord
of Thiru Naagai Divya Desam. Thirumangai
Azhwar dons the role of Parankusa Nayaki.
Parankusa Nayaki is mesmerized by the beauty
of Soundharyaraja Perumal and gels her friend
that she missed a golden opportunity to enjoy
the beauty of the Lord of Thiru Naagai.
Parankusa Nayaki  says "Soundharyaraja
Perumal has a face resembling golden hue.
The emerald pendent on his chest, beams out
light resembling lightening. He appeared to be
a  scholar chanting Veda. Looks like he belongs
to the heavenly abode. He cast his eyes on me
on my youthful body and his eyes ran all over
my body. He was very beautiful. I am scared
of the looks on my mother’s face and not sure
if she had captured these moments of The Lords
eyes were on my youth"

I have never surrendered at your feet and served you in any capacity and manner and yet have been compaasionate to have entered my heart and stay there. I really do not know the reason for such a grace from you, I have never repaid anything as a gratitude for this. I really do not know what service I can render. Please bless me and let me know how to be service to you"

I am not sure whether you intend  to take me under your Lotus feet, glorified by the four veda or push me into the cycle of birth and death and make me suffer from that pain and feel sad. I can not fathom your your intentions"
