Thoomani Madaththu
தூமணி மாடத்து சுற்றும் விளக்கெரிய
In “Thoomani Madaththu” pasuram reaches the gates of a pretty mansion
of a Gopika,
daughter of his affluent uncle and asks her to open the latch of the door. Gopika was in deep slumber like in some one
in coma, lying on mattress wearing jewels, with costly
lamps burning all around her and
fragrance from burning incense filling
the air. Andal Requests her aunty to wake up the Gopika. Andal wants to know if her daughter was a
dump, deaf, lazy or bound by a curse into sleep. Andal tells the Gopika
that Lord Krishnais not
just a cowherd boy(Aayan) but actually Lord Sriman Narayan who is
maamayan, Madhavan and
Vaikundanathan and
she is bound to gain by joing the nonbu, singing his glory by chanting any of his thousand names.
On a Philosophical note, Andal is
concerned that people are lost
in the temporary materialistic world,
comforts, gadgets, jewelary, dress etc. Andal
wants to retrieve them from this transcient
worldly life and lead them to the more
permanent abode of the Lord.
From another angle Paramatma Sriman Narayana is the precious Gem(Thoomani) and Veda (madam or mansion) surrounded by lamps ( Vilakku such as Smirithi,Itihasas). Perhaps Andal is hinting the people are ignorant of this Thoomani are lost in temporary comforts, luxury and sleeping. The best way out of this Nama Smarana on Mdhava continously.
This Andal Pasuram teaches us the need for cleaniless of surroundings and Prayer room as well as our minds. Lighting of lamps and incense as well reguar aradhanam is recommended by Andal
