Azhwars were born as direct grace of Lord Sriman Narayana and they immersed themselves  in understanding the Kalyana Gunams and apara Mahimai of  Lord Sriman Narayana and composed pasurams in praise of Lord Sriman Narayana and these pasurams are known as Divya Prabhandham They are also known as Dravida Veda Sagaram as they are reflections of Veda in Tamil Language Each of the Alwars is an amsam of Lord Sriman Narayana an Ayudham weilded  by Him, Abaharana on His thirumeni and Nithya suri in Paramapadam

BhoothathAzhwar            : Kaumodakee (Mace)

PeyAzhwar                        : Nandaka (Sword)

Thirumalisai Azhwar        : Sudarshanam (Discus)

Thirumangai Azhwar        : Saranga (Rama's bow)

Thondaradippodi Azhwar : Vanamaalai (Sri Vaijayanthi Garland)

Thiruppaan Azhwar           : Srivatsa (mark on chest)

King Kulasekhara Azhwar : Kaustubha (Necklace)

Madhurakavi Azhwar         : Vainatheya (Garuda)

PeriyAzhwar                        : Garuda (Eagle)

NammAzhwar                      : Vishvaksena (commander)

Mudhal Azhwargal Vaazhi Thirunamam

Mudhal Azhwargal Vaazhi Thirunamam

Poigai Azhwar, Bhuthathazhwar and Pei Azhwar have been designated as Mudhal Azhwar, as these were the first three of the twelve Azhwars. They are considered as conch, mace and sword amsam of Sriman Narayana. Poigai Azhwar  appeared  from a lotus bud in a in a pond in tiruvehka,  Bhuthathazhwar appeared in kurukaththi flower at Thirukadal mallai ( Mahabalipuram).  Pei Azhwar appreared in  sevvalli (Red alli-lily) flower in a well at Adhikesava Preumal at Mylapore.

They all met in Thirukovilur on a rainy day and had to share a small space and stayed so close to each other and there was no space left for a fouth person. Each of the Azhwars felt the presence of fourth person moving amongst them in that cramped space. They realized that it was none other that Sriman Narayana and they had the vision of Sriman Narayana. Poigai Azhwar, Bhuthathazhwar and Peyazhwar out of love and Bakthi composed and chanted Mudhal, Irandam and Moondram Thiruvandhadhi respectively.
