Maha Purnar - Peria Nambi

Maha Purnar - Peria Nambi
Marghazhi Kettai

Bhagavat Ramanuja had Five Acharyas. The Primary
Acharya was Peria Nambi alias Maha Poornar. At
Alvandar's instructions, Peria Nambi decides to impart
Divya Prabhandham and Vedanta sastras to Ramanuja
and travels towards Sriperambudur. In the mean time
Lord Vardaja gives six axioms to Bhagavat Ramanuja
through Thirukachi Nambi. So Ramanuja decides to
travel to Srirangam to meet Peria nambi. Both meet at
Madhuranthakam. PanchasamskAram was performed for
Bhagavat Ramanuja by Peria Nambi at Madhuranthakam
and  mantras were taught by Peria Nambi.

Peria Nambi made a great sacrifice along with
Koorthazhwan for the sake of Bhagavat Ramanuja and
lost his eyes as the Chola King ordered them to be
removed. After released by Chola King, Peria Namabi was
returning to Srirangam but due to illness he reached the
Lotus Feet of Lord Narayana in Chola kingdom, away
from Srirangam.

Here is presentation of Thanian and Vazhi Thirunamam of Peria Nambi. His Thrunakshathiram is
Peria Nambi. His Thirunakshatham, Kettai on 27th
December, 2016. This is being celebrated in Peria Nambi
Thirumaligai at 64, East Chithirai Street, Srirangam.

Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar was instrumental in setting the
carnatic concert format and that is  is the default standard in all concerts all over the world. Ariyakudi set the tunes for Andal's Thiruppavai 30 pasurams and introduced Thirupppavai to the Carnatic concerts. Listen to Ariyakudi singing "Pullum Silambina Kaan".

Mayanai Mannu மாயனை மன்னு வடமதுரை மைந்தனைத்

    Mayanai Mannu Vada Mathurai Mainthanai
மாயனை மன்னு வடமதுரை மைந்தனைத்
As Lord Rama’s cornation time, fixed by knowledgeable Rishi Vasishta met with obstacles, a Gopika raises doubts on  how they are going to complete the 30 day Nonbu without any obstacles. Andal  in this pasuram says if the Gopikas worship Lord Krishna  with physical and mental purity and offer fresh flowers and sing His glory, the effect of past and current sins that create the obstacles to the nonbu, would vanish like a straw in fire.

She addresses Lord Krishna as Maayon ( performer of many leelas), identifies him  as resident of his chosen place Mathura, and who was associated with river yamuna since birth, the star born to make the Aayaar kulam to shine, Damaodara( bound in waist by a rope) and who brought fame to mother yashodha.

Andal  says if  Gopikas reach out to Lord Krishna with loud singing and at the same time contemplating on him alone, their troubles would vanish. In this pasuram Andal’s focus is on Lord Krishana in Vibhava Avatar.

Aazhi Mazhai Kanna

Aazhi Mazhai Kanna

Andal sings this pasuram to invoke rain God to shower rain on the land so that all the crops are saved and cattle survive and prosperity is assured  everywhere. This shows  Andal’s concern for the community. She wants the rain God to order the  clouds to suck all water from the deep sea such that the clouds become pretty dark like the color of Sriman Narayana and with a roar  raise to the sky above, emitting lightening like the Chakrayudham in the hands of Lord Padmanabha and and blowing out like the conch in the Lord’s hands and pour  out rain all over the land like arrows from Lord Rama’s Sarngam (Bow). Andal spells out that the land would prosper by observing Marhazhi Nonbu. Andal seeks the blessings from Para, Vyuha,Vibhava Avathars by offering prayers to Antharyami.

Ongi Ulagalantha Uththaman Per Padi

         Ongi Ulagalantha Uththaman Per Padi               ஓங்கி உலகளந்த உத்தமன் பேர்பாடி

Having  prayed to Para Vasudevan annd Vyuha Vasudevan in the first two pasurams, Andal in the third pasuram pays tribute to Vibhava Avatar, Lord Trivikraman as Uththaman, as he is none other than Prushoththaman. Andal advises her troupe to sing the divine glories of Uththaman. Andal Prays to Lord Trivikrama to bless the land with three rain falls. One rainfall for the Vedic scholars, one rainfall for the virtuous folks and one rainfall for blessing the King who rules and upholds justice. Andal expects these rains would be free the land from the perils of floods and drought, and enable produce rich and wealthy with crops, cattle and abundant milk. While Andal prays for the welfare of people, She pleads for Krishanubhavam for herself. Here is the presentation of Pasuram

Andal dedicates this pasuram  to worship Vyuha Avatar  of Sriman Narayana namely Vyuha Vasudevan reclining on Adhisesha  in Parkadal. Andal lays down the rules for observation
of Nonbu namely

3) Take bath early morning.
4) Follow the advice of Purcaharys and elders.

Margazhi Thingal

Margazhi Thingal

Wish you all a blissful month of Margazhi. My you all get immersed in Bhagavan Nama Keerthanam by participating in various activities such as visiting Temples, Bhagawan Nama smaranam, Margazhi Bhajans, Kalkshepams, Dscourses, Carnatic music etc.

Let us look at the Margazhi Thingal Pasuram of Thiruppavai.

As Lord Krishna Glorifies month of Margazhi by saying in Bhagavad Gita “I am Margazhi in Months”, Andal chooses this month for her Nonbu. Andal dedicates this Pasuram to Parthvam of  Sriman Narayana.

Artha Panchakam is fully deployed in this pasuram.  The specific five words in the pasurams indicate the five Swarupams of Artha Panchakam.

NAMAKKE(நமக்கே) - JeevAtma

PODUVEER (போதுவீர்) - UpAya

          தனக்கு நிகரும் ஒப்புமில்லா  ஒப்பிலியப்பனே

Adiyen had an opportunity to visit Thiruvinnagara Divydesam. Whatever little I learned about the temple, Lord Oppiliappan and history of the temple, are offered in the form of a song. Nammazhwar Pasuram (6.3.9) related to Lord Oppiliappan is also added at the end.
