When any one wants to know about a guru, he needs to be introduced by someone who had greater understanding about his work, teachings, glory etc. This time we learn about him through Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi composed by Koil Peria Nambi ( Thiruvarangathamudhanar)


Peria Koil Nambi was handling the administration of Srirangam temple. Bhagavat Ramanuja wanted to streamline the operations of the temple as well as administration process. Peria Koil Nambi was a big process hindrance to Bhagavat Ramanuja's plans. Bhagavat Ramanuja was so good in man mangement and devised a scheme to tackle this situation. He asked Koorththazhwan to develop friendship with Peria Koil Nambi and create a taste and interest in scriptures and Divya Prabhandham for him.. Koorththazhwan undertook the job sincerely and slowly made Peria Koil Nambi to understand Ramanuja's Mahima and greatness. The plan worked and Peria Koil Nambi wanted to become a sishya of Bhagavath Ramanuja and he was asked to take Kooraththazhwan as his Guru so that will give a proximity to work with Bhagavth Ramanuja through Kooraththazhwan. Peria Koil Nambi later composed Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi. Bhagavath Ramanuja did not like the initial version and so scrapped it. Bhagavath Ramanuja guided him to re-write the Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi connecting his relationships to Azhwars, Acharya and their works bringing out the respect and reverence he had for all of them. Once it was completed Bhagavath Ramanuja was very happy and gave the Title "Amudhanar" to Peria Koil Nambi and since he was from Thiruvarangam ( Srirangam), he got the new name "Thiruvarangathamudhanar" Bhagavat Ramanuja gave permission to add "Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi" to Divya Prabhandham, which had 3892 pasurams became 4000 and Came to be known as Nalayira Divya prabhandham. Since the entire Divya Prabhandham is in Tamil also came to be known as Dravida Veda Sagaram.

Let us dwell on the Twenty-third Pasuram of Ramanuja Nootrandhdhi.

In this pasuram Amudhanar says those with unshakable faith in Bhagavath Ramanujakeep him in their heart all the time  and believe that Bhagavath Ramanja is their wealth that protects them forever. As compared to these great devotees of Bhagavath RamanujaAmudhanar wonders if his attempts to sing  the glory of Bhagavath Ramanuja all the time is appropriate enough and not bring disrepute to Bhagavath Ramanuja's glory in any manner. This pasuram brings out naisya anusanthanam(அவை அடக்கம்) of Amudhanar.

In this pasuramAmudhanar praises Lord Sriman Narayana's valour and compassion that he displayed in the battle with Banasuran Lords SubramanyaVinayaka and Shiva, Durga devi, Agni, Jwara Devatha who came in support of Banasura were chased away by Lord Sriman Narayana and when all these Lords recognized Lord Sriman Narayana's mahima and praised him as the "Kararana Buthan" of all the three worlds, he,out of compassion pardoned Banasura and spared his life. Amudhanar says that Bhagavath Ramanuja, who worships Lord Sriman Narayana, is our future long term asset.

Let us dwell on the Twenty-first Pasuram of Ramanuja Nootrandhdhi.


In this pasuram, Amudhanar discusses the relatioship between Yamunacharya (Alavandhar) and Bhagavath Ramanuja.  Amudhanar decribes Yamunacharya as one who strictly adheres to righteous path by observing anushtanams and following codes dictated by Sastras. As per instructions from his guru Nathamuni, Yamunacharya had selected Bhagavath Ramanuja to be the future leader to establish visitadwaitham and had appointed five Acharyas to guide Bhagavat Ramanuja on various subjects. Amudhanar says BhagavathRamanuja,  who was for very fortunate to have had the blessings of the lotus feet of Yamunacharya, saved him and brought him under his fold. Amudhanar says with Bhagavath Ramanuja's protection,  there in need for him to sing the glory of ordinary mortals with Ahamkara

In this pasuram, Amudhanar pays glowing tributes to the musical skills of Nammazhwar while composing Thiruvoimozhi and Nathamunigal as well as Bhagavath Ramanuja's deep love and respect for Nathamuni. Amudhanar says  Thiruvoimozhi came out from the sweet voice of Nammazhwar. Nathamunigal after hearing the sweet rendering of "Aravamudhe" pathigam on Thirukkudanthai Lord, takes efforts to get the entire Thiruvoimozhi and so chants " Kanninun Siruthambu" 12000 times and gets entire Divya Prabhandham from Nammazhwar himself. Nathamunigal had great respect for all those who chanted Thiruvoimozhi. Amudhanar says Bhagavath Ramanuja had Nathamuni in his heart for his untiring effort in making Divya Prhabhandham available to the entire world. Amudhanar says Bhagavth Ramanuja is his great and indestructible wealth.

In this pasuram Amudhanar pays glowing tributes to ThiruvoimozhiNammazhwar and  Bhagvath  RamanujaAmudhanar says that Bhagavath Ramanuja through his discourses and writings made it it very clear to the entire world that Thiruvoimozhi composed by Nammazhwar is the only valuable asset which brings out the auspicious qualities of Lord Sriman Narayana and Thiruvoimozhi is the path to reach the Lord and gets his blessings, as it personifies father, mother, Guru and connects everyone to the ultimate ParamatmaAmudhanar concludes  by stating that Bhagavath Ramanujawho announced the greatness of Nammazhwar and his Thiruvoimozhi to the world,  is his nectar that he cherishes.

Let us dwell on the Eighteenth Pasuram of Ramanuja Nootrandhdhi.

In this pasuram Amudhanar pays tribute to Nammazhwar, Madhurakavi Azhwar and Bhagavath Ramanuja. Amudhanar says Nammazhwar took avatar to compose four prabhandhams in Tamil language, containg the essence of four veda namely Rig, Yajur, Saam and Atharvana. Madhurakavi Azhwar had Satagopan(Nammazhwar) in his heart as his Acharya and served him. Amudhanar says That Bhagavath Ramanuja had great respects  for Madhurakavi Azhwar's Acharya Bakthi and he used to share the greatness of Madhurakavi Azhwar  with his sisyas. Amudhanar concludes by stating that the great Bhagavath Ramanuja is his only refuge.

Once it was completed Bhagavath Ramanuja was very happy and gave the Title "Amudhanar" to Peria Koil Nambi and since he was from Thiruvarangam ( Srirangam), he got the new name "Thiruvarangathamudhanar" Bhagavat Ramanuja gave permission to add "Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi" to Divya Prabhandham, which had 3892 pasurams became 4000 and Came to be known as Nalayira Divya prabhandham. Since the entire Divya Prabhandham is in Tamil also came to be known as Dravida Veda Sagaram.

Let us dwell on the Sixteenth Pasuram of Ramanuja Nootrandhdhi.

In this pasuram, Amudhanar brings out the special connection that Bhagavath Ramanuja had with Andal, who used to decorate her hair and herself with garland of flowers that Periazhwar had specially woven for Lord Ranganatha. Amudhanar says Bhagavath Ramanuja wasa recipient of her compassion and grace, as he immersed himself in her Thiruppavai for its simple but effective poetry and embedded deep philosophies. Bhagavath Ramanuja also got the titles Thiruppavai Jeeyar and Kovil Annan later.

Amudhanar goes on to add that Bhagavath  Ramanuja's avatar had taken place at a time when vedic truths were getting misinterpreted in the Kaliyuga and wth his vast knowledge Bhagavath Ramanuja took action to defend the vedas with his writings, debating skills and arguments.
