Kuththu Vilakkeria

Kuththu Vilakkeria

Having woken up Nappinnai in previous pasuram, Andal and Gopikas approach Lord Krishna. Andal handles the romantic scene very well in the pasuram by describing the setting up of the bed and environment in the room.

Lord Krishna, with flowers decorating his chest and Nappinnai, with flowers decorating her hair, are lying very close to each other on a decorated ivory bed.  Use of the word "பஞ்ச சயன" implies  beautiful, cool, soft, white and  exquisitelcy scented bed. In addition a decorated lamp is burning spreading soft light. They see Lord Krishna keeping his forehead over the chest of Nappinnai. Probabaly Andal wants highlight the Intimacy(anyonyam) between Lord Krishna and Nappinnai. Andal requests Lord Krishna to open his mouth and speak out.

Andal also addresses Nappinnai, as one with her eyes decorated with black liner and chides her for not letting Lord Krishna open his eyes and get up from the bed,  as she does not want to get separated from Lord Krishna even for a little while. Andal says this selfish act does not bore well and it is not fair for others wanting to have a darshan and talk with Lord Krishna and get going with their Nonbu.

Kuththu vilakku has five faces to light up five directions. Use of Kuthu Vilakku probabaly  denotes the five forms( Para, Vyuha, Vibhava, Antharayami and Archa) of Lord Sriman Narayana. The oil that  poured evenly spreads out to all all faces impying that Lord Sriman Narayana is ready to serve devotees from any one form and is eagarly waiting for the devotee's call and the light from the lamp is meant to remove the darkness that is engulfed by the maya of this transient world.

The Five faces of Kuththu Vilakku ( Silver lamp with five faces) may also point to Artha Pachaka principle.

Artha Panchagam is the essence of Nammazhwar's Thiruvaaimozhi

Knowledge of Artha Panchgam is an important requirement for those desirous of Mumumkshu. Artha Panchagam spells out five important doctrines namely

1. Para Swarupam  -
2. Jeevatma Swarupam -
3. Upaya Swarupam
 4. Virothi Swarupam
 5. Prapthi Swarupam -

Undu Mada Kalittran

Undu Mada Kalittran

Having woken up Nandagopalan and Yashodha, Andal decides to use the good offices of Nappinai, daughter-in-law of Nandagopalan who has strong shoulders and a proud owner of army of elephants and who never backtracks on a battle field.

Andal pays tributes to Nappinnai as Daughter-in-law of Nandagopalan, one adorning attractive black tresses, one with soft hands like red-lotus and one whose bracelets on forearm making sounds as she moves them.

Andal indicates to her that dawn has begun by citing the facts that Cuckoos are up and making noises everywhere and Cuckoos sitting on kurukkathi flowers are calling out and requested her to come out and open the doors so that they can
sing Lord Krishna's glory.

According to Purvacharya commentary, in this pasuram, Andal brings out the fact that Lord and Devi are inseparable and waking up (Nappinnai) Pratti first is the means to to reach the ultimate goal of reaching Lord (Krishna).

Ambarame Thanneere

Ambarame Thanneere

Having gained entry into the mansion of Nandagopal by handling the guard tactfully, Andal and Gopikas now proceed to wake up Nandagopalan, Yashodha and Lord Krishna's brother Baladeva. Andal pays tribute to the charity acts of Nanadagoplan in the form, clothes, water and food to the needy in Gokulam. Andal describes Yashodha as woman with impeccable character and a beacon of light to all women of Gokulam and requests to wake up. She pays tributes to Lord Krishna as the one who grew from a Vamana form to Thrivikram form and measured upper and lower worlds with two steps and requests him to wake up. Finally wakes up the strong, well-built Baladeva with anklets and requests him to ensure that his brother also gets up from bed along with him without much ado.

According Purvacahrya vyakyanam, the order chosen by Andal to wake up Nandagopalan, Yashodha, Lord Krishna and Baladeva symbolically refers to waking up Acharyan, Ashtakshari manthram, Meaning of Ashtakshari ans essence of Ashtakshari in the same order.

Nayaganaai Nindra

Nayaganaai Nindra

Till this pasuram, Andal and other Gopikas assembled, visited ten Gopikas with different personalities. Now they proceed to wake up son of Nandagopalan, Lord Krishna and residents of the mansion.

Andal and Gopkikas approach Nandagopalan's mansion, with arches decorated with ornaments and request the guard to open the doors so that they could get the drum, which charming Lord Krishna wearing blue-Sapphire, had promised to give to children of Gokulam.

They also tell the guard that they have come to sing the glory of Lord Krishna with a pure heart and awaken him. They also request the guard not to disappoint them by refusing to let them in nor have any arguments on the topic.

According to purvacharya vyakyanam, "கோயில்காப் பானே!", "கொடித்தோன்றும் தோரண வாயில்காப் பானே!" and "நென்னலே வாய்நேர்ந்தான்" refer to Thirumanthram, Dwayam and Charma slogam

Andal refers to the inner purity as the Gopikas have come with full faith in ragasya thrayam and full faith in Lord Krishna.

Andal referes to Lord Krishna as "Nayagan", savior of Gokulam.

Elle Ilankiliye

Elle Ilankiliye

In "எல்லே இளங்கிளியே! இன்னம் உறங்குதியோ?"

pasuram,  Andal has set this in a dialog mode between the Gopika

still on bed and other Gopikas assembled outside her house trying

to invite her to join the Nonbu. The assembled Gopikas makes fun

of the Gopika by inquiring if she is still asleep and pat comes the

reply asking the Gopikas not to redicule her and that she would

join soon.

Assembled Gopikas further harass her saying that they

know how sincere her are promises, based on past history. This

Gopika accepts defeat and asks them to proceed and that she

would join soon.   The Assembled Gopikas asks her to come out

and see for herself and count who all have assembled. The

assembled Gopikas invite her join them and sing the glory of Lord

Sriman Narayana, who destroyed enemoes in war and who

vanquishes an elephant of Kamsa's army.

In this pasuram, Andal teaches us how to work and treat

Bhagavathas. Always invite Bhagavathas with a smiling face and

talk to them sweetly. Focus should be on Bhagavathas and not on

other mundane matters. Never utter harsh words on Bhagavathas.

Treat Bhagavathas with respect. Desire to be in the company of

Bhagavathas and never stay away from them. The criticism by

Bhagavathas should be accepted with humility, with a view to

transform oneself. Sing the glory of Lord Sriman Narayana to

please the Bhagavathas and join them in Namasmarana.

Ungal Puzhakkadai

Ungal Puzhakkadai

In this Pasuram "உங்கள் புழைக்கடைத் தோட்டத்து வாவியுள்".    Andal visits a Gopika who promised not only get up first but also wake up other Gopikas. But alas!!! Here she is sleeping happily. Andal cites events such as water lilies have closed their buds and red lilies have opened their buds in a small pond in the backyard of that Gopika. Andal also states that saffron clothed saints and yogis have headed to the temples to chime the bells.

Andal invites the Gopika to wake up, join the Nonbu and sing the glory of lotus eyed Lord Sriman Narayana with wide arms and who holds  the conch (sangu) and the wheel (chakra) in his hands.

Perhaps the loud message from Andal in this pasuram, is bhagavath kainkaryam promises once made,  committments must be kept up.

Pullin Vaai Keendaanai

                   Pullin Vaai Keendaanai

In the pasuram "புள்ளின்வாய் கீண்டானை, பொல்லா அரக்கனைக்", sings the valour of vibhava Avatars of Lord Rama and Krishna as both Avatars emanated from Lord Sriman Narayana. while lord Krishna killed Bakasuran who came in the disguise of crane, Lord Rama beheaded ten headed Ravana.

Andal chides a Gopika with beautiful eyes, who is dreaming in sleep, thinking about her previous episode with Lord Krishna. Andal asks her to wake up and join the Nonbu and sing the glory of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. Andal says that all other Gopikas have already assembled for Nonbu.

Andal also indicates that dawn has begun by citing the facts that Jupiter has set, Venus has risen and birds' chirping is going on.

With the usage of "குள்ளக் குளிரக் குடைந்து நீராடாதே" Andal is inviting this Gopika to come enjoy the ultimate bliss by meditating on Lord of Paramapatham, Sriman Narayana, from whom the vibhava Avatars of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna emanated.

Probably this pasuram is a reminder not only to the Gopika but also for us to wake up early morning, perform our nithya anushtanam and meditate on Lord Sriman Narayana

Kanaithu Ilam

Kanaithu Ilam

In the Pasuram "கனைத்திளங் கற்றெருமை கன்றுக் கிரங்கி", Andal's focus is on vibhava Avatar of  Lord Rama. Andal describes him as "மனத்துக் கினியானை" (the one who is sweeter even to think or meditate in mind).

Andal also says that Lord Rama killed Ravana out of sheer anger that given enough opportunities to correct himself, Ravana did not do so. Lord Rama was considerate not to kill Ravana, after he was defeated and disarmed in a battle and asked him to come next day with full weapons and supporting army.

Andal and her troupe next visit the house of a rich cow heard. Gopika of this house is sleeping without attending to the cow from whose udder, milk is dripping thinking of its calf and at the same time making the floor slushy.

Andal reminds the maid of the cowherd that by sleeping she not only neglects her duties of milking the cow but also missing the opportunity to join the Nonbu and sing the glory of Lord Rama. Andal says that her neighbors are noticing the neglect of duty and deep slumber and asks her to wake up and join the Nonbu.

The message that Andal sends is to never neglect our duties but most important is never let go an opportunity to sing the glory of Lord Sriman Narayana. Margazhi is the month when Thiruppavai is sung for 30 days but our poorvacharyas included Thiruppavai in Nithayaanusandaam giving us an opportunity to sing Thiruppavai every day. Even today in most Sattrumurai kalam, " சிற்றம் சிறு காலே வந்து உன்னை சேவித்து" and "வங்கக் கடல் கடைந்த மாதவனை கேசவனை"  pasurams are chanted in most temples.
