Divya Desa Mangalasasanam Thiruvanbil - DD005 Nootrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi Pasuram ( Pillai Perumal Iyengar)

Divya Desa Mangalasasanam  Thiruvanbil - DD005 Nootrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi Pasuram
( Pillai Perumal Iyengar)

Azhwars have done Mangalasasanam for some Divya Desams very elaborately. For example all 11 Azhwars have sung in praise of Srirangam( Divya Desam 1), Ten Azhwars have sung in praise of Thiruvengadam ( Divya Desam 75) and Thiruparkadal ( Divya Desam 107). Managasasanam to as many as 67 Divydesams  was done by one of the eleven Azhwars only

Mangalasasanam depending on how elaborate it is, covered the one or more of following aspects

  • Name of Divya desam directly or in a subtle way
  • Name of Emperuman directly or in a subtle way
  • Manobhavam of Azhwar who composed the pasuram
  • References to events , Leelas in Vibhava Avatars
  • References to Para, Vyuha and Antharyami forms of Sriman Narayana
  • References to 26 Thatwams ( Paramatma, Jeevatma, Moola Prakruthi, Mahaan, Ahankaaram, Manasu, Kaalam Five each of elements, attributes,  Indriyas and Senses)
  • Divya Desa Vimana, Pushkarini etc
  • Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings
The pasuram presented below is by Pillai Perumal Iyengar, who was a sishya of Paarasar Bhattar. Pillai Perumal Iyengar  had composed Ashta( eight) Prabhandhams. One of them is Notrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi which had one pasuram each for each of the 108 Divya Desams.

In this Pasuram the composer, Pillai Perumal Iyengar advises us to focus our mind on the Lotus feet of the Lord of Thiruvanbil for the sake of getting the liberation rather than praying for temporary pleasures. Pillai Perumal Iyengar advises us to sing the glory of Lord of Thiruvanbil Divya Desam who has no birth and who is none other than the first and oldest God (Athimoolam) and the one who sits under the white umbrella and one who rules the Vinnulagam and Mannulagam.

  • Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings
The pasuram presented below by Thirumangai Azhwar (Parakalan)  is  the Sarngam (bow) amsam of Srimana Narayana. He holds the distinction of having sung the most number of pasurams than the rest of the Azhwars. Also Thirumangai Azhwar has performed Mangalasasanam at 86 Divya Desams, the maximum by any Azhwar.

In this "
ஆங்கு மாவலி வேள்வியி லிரந்துசென் றகலிட முழுதினையும் "  pasuram, Thirumangai Azhwar prays
to the Lord of Thiruvellarai Sri Pundarikakshan
and requests his blessings. Thirumangai Azhwar
says that Lord of Thiruvellarai is none other than
the Purushoththama, Lord Sriman Narayana, who in
Vamana Avatar planned and took the role of a
dwarf brahmin boy  and sought a gift of three feet
of land and later as Trivikrama measured both
upper and nether worlds with two strides.

Thirumangai Azhwar never fails to capture the
natural beauty of Thiruvellarai divya desam and
enjoys the bees hovering around red blossoms
of the Asoka Tree and the singing of cuckoos
flying around mango trees.

Here is a presentation on Periazhwar's Mangalasaanam  to Lord of Thiruvellarai  through "ஆங்கு மாவலி வேள்வியி லிரந்துசென் றகலிட முழுதினையும்" Pasuram.

வெள்ளரை கண்டீரோ திருவெள்ளரை கண்டீரோ

Thiruvellarai divya Desam
வெள்ளரை கண்டீரோ திருவெள்ளரை கண்டீரோ

Thiruvellarai divya Desam is 20 kms away from Trichy. This temple is much older to Srirangam and was built by Sibi Chakravarthy. This is a Divya desam where Bhagavat Ramanuja spent 12 years. Pundaraikakshan, the moolavar of this Divya desam  ordained Thayar to send prasadam to Udayavar and I believe that this tradition of sending Thaligai(Prasadam) offered to Thayar is sent to Udayavara Sannathi.

This temple is on a white rock and has 59 steps to reach the Moolavar. One has to climb 18 steps representing 18 chapters of Gita, 4 steps representing four vedas, five steps representing Panch Bhootham or elements. 8 steps representing 8 Akshar of Ashtakshar Mantram and Finally 24 steps representing 24 Aksharas of Gaythri Manthram. The temple has three entrances Uthrayana, Dakshinayana and Nazhi ketta.

Here is a poem on Thiruvellarai Divya desam.

The pasuram presented below is by Periazhwar also known as Vishnu Chiththan. Periazhwar who had a Nanadavanam of his own good used to offer a variety of flowers every day as mala, which of course Andal used it on herself first before offering it to the Lord. Periazhwar focused on Krishna and his pasurams to Lord Krishna.Even other Archaavatharams appeared as Lord Krishna to him. His entire Peria Thirumozhi is devoted to Krishnavatharam.

In his "
இந்திர னோடு பிரமன் ஈசன் இமையவ ரெல்லாம்
pasuram, PeriaAzhwar playing the role of Yashodha and treating lord of Thiruvellarai as Lord Krishna invites the Lord to come near him so that he can ward of effect of evil eyes falling on  Lord Krishna. Periazhwar says That Indra, Brahmma, other Gods and Devas have brought Manthra Pushpam  and have assembled and hiding to worship Lord Of Thiruvellarai. Periazhwar says " Oh Lord residing amongst men of learning in Thiruvellarai, where mansions touch the moon !!.Come and have the Kappu to ward off evil eye."
