Divya Desa Mangalasasanam Thiruvazhundur - DD023 Thirumangai Azhwar Peria Thirumozhi 1592(7.5.5)

Divya Desa Mangalasasanam
Thiruvazhundur - DD023

Thirumangai Azhwar Peria Thirumozhi 1592(7.5.5)

Azhwars have done Mangalasasanam for some Divya Desams very elaborately. For example all 11 Azhwars have sung in praise of Srirangam( Divya Desam 1), Ten Azhwars have sung in praise of Thiruvengadam ( Divya Desam 75) and Thiruparkadal ( Divya Desam 107). Managasasanam to as many as 67 Divydesams  was done by one of the eleven Azhwars only

Mangalasasanam depending on how elaborate it is, covered the one or more of following aspects

  • Name of Divya desam directly or in a subtle way
  • Name of Emperuman directly or in a subtle way
  • Manobhavam of Azhwar who composed the pasuram
  • References to events , Leelas in Vibhava Avatars
  • References to Para, Vyuha and Antharyami forms of Sriman Narayana
  • References to 26 Thatwams ( Paramatma, Jeevatma, Moola Prakruthi, Mahaan, Ahankaaram, Manasu, Kaalam Five each of elements, attributes,  Indriyas and Senses)
  • Divya Desa Vimana, Pushkarini etc
  • Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings
The pasuram presented below by Thirumangai Azhwar (Parakalan)  is  the Sarngam (bow) amsam of Srimana Narayana. He holds the distinction of having sung the most number of pasurams than the rest of the Azhwars. Also Thirumangai Azhwar has performed Mangalasasanam at 86 Divya Desams, the maximum by any Azhwar.

In this Pasuram "பகலு மிரவும் தானேயாய்ப் பாரும் விண்ணும் தானேயாய்", Thirumangai Azhwar offers
Mangalasasanam to the Lord of Thiruvazhundur Divya
Desam. Thirumangai Azhwar says " Lord Sriman Narayana has taken Archavatar to reside in Thiruvazhundur. Thiruvazhundur has many mansions that are flying flags on its top. The dust is flying from Chariots running on the streets. The sky around Thiruvazhundur is filled with fragrant smoke emanating  from Sambrani(Auromere Incense) that the women use to dry their hair. The entire atmosphere resembles dark rain clouds. Such is the richness and beauty of Thiruvazhundur.   The Lord who directs Sun and Moon and thereby day and night, The Lord who directs the Leela and Nithya Vibhuthi, The Lord who projects himeself as dark to Bright objects as dark and the Lord who appears as dark to rajas and Thaamsic people and Bright to sathwic people resides in Thiruvazhundur."

Here is a presentation on Mangalasasanam to the Lord of
Thiruvazhundur Divya Desam through Thirumangai
Azhwar's Peria Thirumozhi pasuram
"பகலு மிரவும் தானேயாய்ப் பாரும் விண்ணும் தானேயாய்".

The pasuram presented below is by Pillai Perumal Iyengar, who was a sishya of Paarasar Bhattar. Pillai Perumal Iyengar  had composed Ashta( eight) Prabhandhams. One of them is Notrettu Thiruppathi Andhadhi which had one pasuram each for each of the 108 Divya Desams.

In this Pasuram Perumal Pillai Iyengar performs Mangalasasanam to the Lord of Thiruvazhundur. Perumal Pillai Iyengar calls those that spend time on materialistic objects and puruits instead of focusing attention on the Lotus feet of the Lord as ones as ones without brain and wandering like ghosts. Perumal Pillai Iyengar advises them to become devotees of Lord of Thiruvezhundur Divya Desam and srve him. If they do so, their fearful sins of the past and present that have grown like bush would simply be wiped out. The Lord with Red lotus eyes and the deity at Thiruvazhundur Divya Desam, though may appear to be unapproachable and far way, That Lord would show up very nearer to them during final hours and bless them and lead them to heavenly path.

The pasuram presented below is by Nammazhwar.

Nammazhwar was known by the name of Maran from childhood. He was different from other children and pretty abnormal in day-to-day activities and his parents gave him the name Maran, indicating that he was unique and different from the children of his age.  Nammazhwar's parents tried everything under their control to get the child back to normal and ultimately surrendered to Athinatha perumal in Thirukurugoor and left the child under his care. The child moved on its own from Athinathar sannathi into a Tamarind tree in the temple complex and stayed there for 16 long years almost immobile. There was big transformation in Maran at the age of 16.

Nammazhwar composed and sang four prabhandhams namely Thiru Viruththam, Thiruvasiriyam, Peria Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvaaimozhi reflecting Rig, Yajur, Atharvana and Sama veda. These Divya Prabhandhams got the name Dravida Veda Sagaram because they were in Tamil and essence of corresponding Sanskrit Veda

In this Thiruvaaimozhi pasuram "
மாசறு சோதியென் செய்ய வாய்மணிக் குன்றத்தை ", Nammazhwar offers Mangalasasanam to the Lords of Thiru Thajai, Thiru manikundram and Thiru Thanjayali Divya Desams. Nammazhwar assumes the role  of Parankusa Nayaki and informs her friend that as Lords of these Divya Desams are not paying attention to her, she has decided to ascend and ride a horse made of Palm tree stems to express her disappointment. Parankusa Nayaki's friend says that the people of the town and her mother would condemn her action.. Parankusa Nayaki says " I have lost my heart to the Lord who hasa blemish less radiance, the Lord with red lips, and the Lord who resembles like a spotless mountain of gems and the Lord with blemish less character and the Lord who is also the oldest Primordial God. How long can I survive like this, having lost all my shine, health, and my sharp thinking power beacuse of my disappointments. Even if the people of the town were to blame me for my madness, would it really matter to me at this juncture"

உண்டோ சடகோபர்க்கொப்பொருவர் -1

உண்டோ சடகோபர்க்கொப்பொருவர்- 1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manavala Mamungal in his immortal Upadesa Rathna malai pays tributes to Nammazhwar.

Manavala Mamanigal says there is no day greater than the the day on which visaka Star falls in  Vaiakasi month. He wonders if there is any one equal to Nammazhwar. He also says there is no literature that parallels  Thiruvoimozhi, composed by nammazhwar. Manavala Mamunigal goes one step further and wonders if there is any town that can match Then Kurugur, the birth place of Nammazhwar.

Why Manavala Mamunigal wonders if there is any one equal to Nammazhwar. It is because of deep Love and Bakathi for Lord Srimana Natayana and his attachment to five forms of Para, Vyuha, Vibhava and Antharyami.

While he has a good understading of Para, Vyuha and Vibhava Avartas, he focuses on Archa Avatars and Krisha Avatar in his Thiruvoimzhi Divya Prbhandham. He believed in uncondtional surrender and Saranagathi. Since he never stepped out from the Tamrind tree in Thirukrugur temple, It is said that Archavatars from different Divyadesams gave him vision and Darshan at Thirukurugur in the location where he was seated for 32 years.

Let us listen to Nammazhwar's story by a Bhattar from Thirukkurugur temple at the very spot where Nammazhwar sat for 32 years.  Please visit the URL below,
