Kattruk Karavai

 Kattruk Karavai

In this pasuram "கற்றுக் கறவைக்", Andal and her troupe are assembled in the courtyard of a very, rich, well connected, distinguished, blemishless and powerful family in the city and are trying to wake her up to join the Nonbu to sing the glory of Sriman Narayan.

Andal was a bit surprised that this Gopika is unmoved by the chorus singing going on in the front courtyard the glory of  Lord Narayana, who is as dark as the clouds. Andal can not fathom the purpose of Gopika's sleep without joining the Nonbu when all her  relatives are part of the Nonbu.

Notru(ch) Chuvarkkam

Notru(ch) Chuvarkkam

In "Notru(ch) Cuvarkkam" Pasuram Andal approaches another Gopika who appears to be in penance in order to gain entry to heaven. Andal says the Gopika should have the courtesy to open the door and let them in and also reply to their invitation to join the nonbu. Andal is wondering if the lazy Gopika had inherited Kumbakarna's deep slumber.

Andal invites this lovely damsel to come and join the nonbu to sing the glory of Narayana, who vanquished Kumbalkarna in Rama Avatar and who wears fragrant Thulasi mala, as garland.  Andal requests her to open the door.

With Usage of the Phrase "மாற்றமும் தாராரோ வாசல் திறவாதார்", Andal implies Bhagavathas should be received well, treated with dignity and paid respects and be made comfortable.

Thoomani Madaththu

Thoomani Madaththu

In “Thoomani Madaththupasuram reaches the gates of a pretty mansion of a Gopika, daughter of his affluent uncle and asks her to open the latch of the door.  Gopika was in deep slumber like in some one in coma, lying on mattress wearing jewels, with costly
lamps burning all around her and fragrance from burning  incense filling the air.  Andal Requests her aunty to wake up the GopikaAndal wants to know if her daughter was a dump, deaf, lazy or bound by a curse into sleep. Andal tells the Gopika that Lord Krishnais not just a cowherd boy(Aayan) but actually Lord Sriman Narayan who is  maamayan, Madhavan and Vaikundanathan and she is bound to gain by joing the nonbu, singing his glory by chanting any of his thousand names.
On a Philosophical note, Andal is concerned that people are lost
in the temporary materialistic world, comforts, gadgets, jewelary, dress etc. Andal wants to retrieve them from this transcient worldly life and  lead them to the more permanent abode of the Lord.

From another angle Paramatma Sriman Narayana is the precious Gem(Thoomani) and Veda (madam or mansion) surrounded by lamps ( Vilakku such as Smirithi,Itihasas). Perhaps Andal is hinting the people are ignorant of this Thoomani are lost in temporary comforts, luxury and sleeping. The best way out of this Nama Smarana on Mdhava continously.

This Andal Pasuram teaches us the need for cleaniless of surroundings and Prayer room as well as our minds. Lighting of lamps and incense as well reguar aradhanam is recommended by Andal

Keezh Vanam

Keezh Vanam

In “Keezh Vanam VellaiPasuram continues to visit Gopikas and asking them to join the Margazhi nonbu. This time Andal selects a Gopika who is very dear to Lord Krishna, Whom Andal addresses as “Kothugulamadaya Pavaai” ( A girl with Lots of enthusiasm and happiness). Which Gopika would not be in this happy state if she is very close to Lord Krishna?. Andal cites several events that signal the arrival of dawn such as the
Whitening of the sky on the lower parts and the buffalo already grazing the meadows. But Alas! Even this girl is not prepared to believe that dawn has set in.

Andal says that others who joined the Nonbu procession are in a hurry to move forward but  I am holding them just for your sake. Andal thinks that brave men are liked by girls so she  describes the brave acts of Lord Krishna  such as  tearing of demon kesi’s mouth apart and vanquishing the wrestlers of Kamsa‘s army so as to tempt the Gopika to join the Nonbu. Finally Andal says that by joining the nonbu and singing the glory with humilty would earn the grace and daya of Lord Krishna, who is leader of all Devas and Lord Krishan would have a deep consideration
for the welfare of Nonbu participants. With the usage of words  such as “தேவாதி தேவனைAndal refers to Athigiri Varadarajar.

Keechu Keechen

                           Keechu Keechu Endru Engum

In Keechu KeechendrengumPasuram
continues from where she left off in Previous PasuramPullum Silambianakaal”, Andal and her troup goes to another Gopika’a house and addreses her as Pei Penne”.

Andal lists a number of events signaling the arrival of dawn. This time it is the sounds arising out of chirping of Bhardwaja Birds  (Cuckoo), the sounds arising from the churning sound from the butter pail by maids as well as sound from  bangles and ornaments in their hands, Andal now tempts her to join by addressing her as “Nayaka Pen Pillaai” instead of “Pei Penne”.

Andal tries another trick by addressing her as one having Tejas. Nothing works. She wonders if their singing the Glory of Kesava who is none other than Lord Narayana is making her comfortably sleep. Andal is requesting her to open the door .

Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar was instrumental in setting the
carnatic concert format and that is  is the default standard in all concerts all over the world. Ariyakudi set the tunes for Andal's Thiruppavai 30 pasurams and introduced Thirupppavai to the Carnatic concerts. Listen to Ariyakudi singing "Keechu Keechu Endru Engum" .
