Divya Desa Managalasasanam   Thiruvarangam - DD001  Nammazhwar's Thiruvaaimozhi (3578) Pasuram 7.2.7

Azhwars have done Managalasasanam for some Divya Desams very elaborately. For example all 11 Azhwars have sung in praise of Srirangam( Divya Desam 1), Ten Azhwars have sung in praise of Thiruvengadam ( Divya Desam 75) and Thiruparkadal ( Divya Desam 107). Managasasanam to as many as 67 Divydesams  was done by one of the eleven Azhwars only.

Mangalasasanam depending on how elaborate it is, covered the one or more of following aspects

  • 1      Name of Divya desam directly or in a subtle way

  • 2      Name of Emperuman directly or in a subtle way

  • 3     Manobhavam of Azhwar who composed the pasuram

  • 4      References to events , Leelas in Vibhava Avatars

  • 5     References to Para, Vyuha and Antharyami forms of  Sriman Narayana

  • 6      References to 26 Thatwams ( Paramatma, Jeevatma, Moola Prakruthi, Mahaan, Ahankaaram, Manasu, Kaalam, Five each of elements, attributes,  Indriyas and Senses)

  • 7      Divya Desa Vimana, Pushkarini etc

  • 8      Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings

The pasuram presented below is by Nammazhwar.

Nammazhwar was known by the name of Maran from childhood. He was different from other children and pretty abnormal in day-to-day activities and his parents gave him the name Maran, indicating that he was unique and different from the children of his age.  Nammazhwar's parents tried everything under their control to get the child back to normal and ultimately surrendered to Athinatha perumal in Thirukurugoor and left the child under his care. The child moved on its own from Athinathar sannathi into a Tamarind tree in the temple complex and stayed there for 16 long years almost immobile. There was big transformation in Maran at the age of 16.

Nammazhwar composed and sang four prabhandhams namely Thiru Viruththam, Thiruvasiriyam, Peria Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvaaimozhi reflecting Rig, Yajur, Atharvana and Sama veda. These Divya Prabhandhams got the name Dravida Veda Sagaram because they were in Tamil and essence of corresponding Sanskrit Veda

In this Perumal Thiumozhi pasuram "பாலதுன் பங்கள் இன்பங்கள் படைத்தாய்! பற்றிலார் பற்றநின் றானே  " which is set in Nayaka-Nayaki Bhavam with Lord Srimana Narayana as the Nayaka and  Nammazhwar as Nayaki, Nammazhwar performs Managalasasanam to Lord Ranganatha. Parankusa Nayaki's mother says that her daughter Parankusa Nayaki is impacted by separation from th Nayak, Lord Ranganatha and tears are falling down like rainand keeps uttering"Oh Lord you created pain and please for each situation as justified. You are the administrator of time. You are the Lord that resides in the milky ocean. You are the resort to those who give up every thing. You are the presiding deity of the great temple Thiruvarangamsurrounded by river waters filled with jumping fish. You are capable of purifying me"

The pasuram presented below is by Andal also known as Soodikoduththa Nachiyar. Andal was divine gifted daughter of  Periazhwar who brought her up in Bakthi claden environment. He was narrating the entire Bala Leelas of Krishna. Kothai was fully immersed in Lord Krishna and her bakthi to the Lord had so much depth that Kothai brought the Lord under control with her bakthi. Periazhwar had a Nanadavanam of his own and used to offer a variety of flowers every day as mala, which Andal used it on herself first before offering it to the Lord. Andal composed Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi bakthi laden pasurams on Lord Krishna.

In this Nachiyar Thiumozhi pasuram " தாமுகக்கும் தம்கையில் சங்கமே போலாவோ " , Andal  expresses her disappointment and feelings arising out of the fact that Lord Ranganatha is ignoring her

Andal who is upset with the fact that Lord Ranganatha had not cast a glance at her. She complains to the assembled ladies that the sangu bangles on her hand is slipping out of her hands as the hands have become thin because of suffering from separation from the Lord and Andal says " While Lord Ranganatha holds the sangu (conch) all the time in his hands , is it not fair for me to hold on to my bangle,If only the Lord reclining on Adhisesha had the compassion to care for me". Andal feels jealous about Adhisesha soley sharing Lord Ranganatha's companionship and describes him as one with fierce emitting fire" She even hints that if Lord Ranganatha is bent on resting on Adhisesha without caring for her, the Lord ought to have stayed backin Paramapadam.
