ஒரு நூற்று நாற்பத்துமூன்றுரைத்தால் வாழியே
உயர் அரங்கற்கே கண்ணி யுகந்தளித்தாள் வாழியே
மருவாரும் திருமல்லிவள நாடி வாழியே

In this pasuram Andal says how Gopikas with moon like face and decorated with ornaments, approached Lord Krishna who is none else than  Lord Kesava ( one with curly hairs and the killer of demon Kesi) and Lord Madhava ( husband of Mahalakshmi who came out of during Churning of the ocean by Devas and Asuras with the help of Thirumal, Vasuki and Mahendra Mountain) offered prayers to Lord Krishna and obtained the Parai. 

Andal fully understands that the effect of grace from Thirumal would have its full impact only when it is pre-approved by Mahalaksmi's grace. In essence, this pasuram bring out importance of Dwayam 

The usage of  "வங்கக் கடல்கடைந்த மாதவனை" brings out, Lord Narayana's multi purpose aims for his missions.  Out of Vatsalya for Devas, Madhava brought out Amirtham to save them from Asuras in future and at the same time Madhava got Sri for himeself and Kamadenu for the benefit of devas. The entire script of Ocean Churning drama was planned, directed and executed single handed, exhibiting his divine qualities of Swamitva, Saushilya and Saulabhya.  Sure Thirumal deserved an heavenly Oscar. To achieve his goals, Madhava was ready to work and team with Asuras and took the important task of distribution of Amruit  by assuming a female role. 


Andal, daughter of Bhattar Piran of Srivilli Puththur( decorated with fresh flower),concludes the 30 Pasurams of Thiruppavai with the note detailing the benefits of reciting the 30 pasurams. Those who recite Thiruppavai(garland of  30 pasurams composed with rich Tamil with Veda upanishad saram buried in with Bakthi saram)  would receive the grace of Thirumal( with beautiful crimson eyes and powerful shoulders with four arms) and Mahalakshmi.

Purvacharyars say that there are Five prerequisites for Saranagathi namely


  1. Commit to do acts which God likes
  2. Commit not to indulge in acts that God would not like
  3. Absolute and firm faith in God
  4. Make a request to the God for Protection
  5. Express one's helplessness


Nammazhwar in his Thiruvaaimozhi fulfills all the prerequisites and was ready in all respects in the act of Sanagathi and waiting for moksham. But Lord Sriman Narayana was delaying the process as the Lord wanted to get out all the four prabhandhams equivalent to Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharvan vedams from Nammazhwar for the benefit of his devotees. 

Nammazhwar ended up doing Saranagathi to several Archavathars in the process and following five pasurams are indicative of it.


1) 3416. ஆறெ னக்குநின் பாதமே சரணாகத் தந்தொழிந்தாய் pasuram on Deiva Nayagan Perumal Vanamamlai Divya Desam  

2) அரியே றே!என் அம்பொற் சுடரே! செங்கட் கருமுகிலே pasuram on Aravamudham Peruma of  Thirukudanthai Divya Desam

3) 3434. காண்பதெஞ் ஞான்றுகொலொ வினையேன்கனி வாய்மடவீர், pasuram
on Kural Kolapiran Perumal of Thiru Vallavazh Divya Desam

4) 3450. நாகணைமிசை நம்பிரான் சரணே சரண் நமக்கென்று, நாடொறும் pasuram in Piranda varum Pathigam

5) 3559. அகல கில்லேன் இறையும் என் றலர்மேல் மங் கை யுறைமார்பா, pasuram on Thgiruvengamudaiyan Perumal of Thirumalai Thiruppathi Divya Desam

Andal is fond of the name of Govinda for addressing Lord Krishna. A few Pasurams back she addressed him as blemishless Govinda. In this pasuram Andal uses கோவிந்தா! in a very affectionate way.

Winding back in memory lane, I recall a scenario while travelling by PTC in Chennai. The buses run full during peak times and appear full near the two exits with 10-15 people hanging on the foot board. At the very next stop one or two get down but another 10-15 get into the bus crowding the foot board area further. A few adventurous people keep running along with the bus and plead with those hanging from the foot board to give them a hold for just for one foot and hand. After some time these adventurous passengers push others, move inside the bus literately edge or squeeze out those already sitting and make themselves comfortably seated. இடத்தை கொடுத்து மடத்தை பிடிக்கும் கதை போல இருக்கும்.

Andal says that the sincerity with which they woke up at dawn, without minding the early morning Margazhi cold weather (in Gokulam), singing His glory is had a motive more than getting the parai just for this one Nonbu.

Andal and Gopikas earlier came to Lord Krishna's home, pleaded with gate keeper, by passed Nandagopla and Yashodha and gained entry in Lord Krishna's chambers and wake him up pleading with him in several pasurams only to tell him in this pasuram, that their request for Parai for Nonbu was only a pretext but their real goal was to always to earn His grace just not for that day but be associated with Lord Krishna for seven births and be under his control and be ruled by him. They even go the extent of saying should any other desire other than serving him erupt in them, that should be erased.  The Act of Andal and Gopikas reminded me of the Bus passenger "இடத்தை கொடுத்து மடத்தை பிடிக்கும் "story.  

The usage of "உன்தன்னோடு உற்றோமே ஆவோம்; உனக்கே நா மாட்செய்வோம்" Andal implies that Andal and Gopikas are using Lord Krishna as s the means and end to achieve their goal of finally merging in him.

Andal in this pasuram brings out the facts that Gopikas of Gokulam are innocent, ignorant of social edicacies and illiterate, The only positives about these Gopkias are their forunate association with Lord Krishna because the good karma of past lives. These Gopikas only pastime to go with the cows to the forest for ensuring they graze the meadows and get good nourishment and these Gopikas belong to the not so intelligent, cowherd community. It is poosible these Gopikas language and behavior may not be that polished and inadvertently may have offended Lord Krishna unintentionally. Andal addresses Lord Krishna as "குறைவொன்று மில்லாத கோவிந்தா!' implying the "blemish less" Lord and "இறைவா "  implying "Lord Krishna" and requests him to forgive their inappropriateness, if any and bless them with Parai
