பெரியாழ்வார் திருமொழி 2.2.1 அரவணையாய் ஆயரேறே அம்மமுண்ணத் துயிலெழாயே

Chanting Suprabatham to wake up Vibhava and Archavathar is in vogue since Ramaavathar days in Treta Yuga.. Sage Viswamitra took Rama and Lakshmana to the forest to help protect his Yaga from demons. In the mornings Sage Viswamitra used to sing suprabatham to wake up Rama to get ready to his duty of protecting his yaga.

कौसल्या सुप्रजा राम पूर्वासन्ध्या प्रवर्तते ।
उत्तिष्ठ नरशार्दूल कर्तव्यं दैवमाह्निकम् ॥ 1 ॥


Thondarapodi Azhwar was lost is worldly pleasures and so Lord Ranganatha makes him realize his mistake and wakes him up and gears him into Emperumon service. Thondarapodi Azhwar in turn composed Thirupalliyezhuchchi the main purpose was to wake Lord Ranganatha and bless his devotees.


Periazhwar also composed 10 pasurams to wake up Child Krishna. Periazhwar assumes the role of Yashodha and sings a suprabatham   to wake up child Krishna. The last time child Krishna had taken food  late in the evening previous day. Krishna has not woken up and Periazhwar is concerned that Child Krishna had not taken his morning quota of milk and composes this Pathigam starting with 

அரவணையாய் ஆயரேறே அம்மமுண்ணத் துயிலெழாயே
   இரவுமுண்ணாது உறங்கிநீபோய் இன்றுமுச்சி கொண்டதாலோ
   வரவும்காணேன் வயிறசைந்தாய் வனமுலைகள் சோர்ந்துபாய
   திருவுடைய வாய்மடுத்துத் திளைத்துதைத்துப் பருகிடாயே."

Also there is the account of Nampaduvan of Thirukurungudi singing pasurams to the accompaniment of his veena to wake up Thirukurugoor Nambi in the early morning hours. 

Later Manavala Mamunigal ordained Prathivathi Bhayankaram Annagrachariar to compose a suprabatham for Thiruvegadamudaiyan which was later popularized by  M.S Subbalakshmi amma.
