Devaraja Panchakam by Dhoddacharya
-----------------------------------------------
Sri Dhoddacharya
hailed from a priest family that was taking care of Lord Laksmi Narashimaswami
temple at Ghatikachaalam also known as Sholingur. Sri Dhoddacharya was also an
ardent devotee of Lord Vardaraja of Kanchipuram. He used to visit Annual Brammothsavam
especially the famous Garuda Sevai of Lord Varadaraja. A specific year he could
not make it to the Garudasevai festival as he was unwell. He felt miserable, as
he was missing the Seva of Lord Varadaraja. He stood at the Thakkan Kulam(
Water Tank) and facing the direction of Kanchipuram Sri Dhoddacharya, offered five verses ( Devaraja Panjakam) to
Lord Varadaraja graphically describing the scenario at the Garduasevai
Festival, the beauty and majesty of the Lord Varadaraja on the Garuda and
decorated with gold ornaments and blessing the crowd gathered. The
compassionate Lord Varadaraja flew on the shoulders of Garuda and gave darshan
to Sri Dhoddacharya. To mark this event, every year during annual Garuda Seva
festival in Vaikasi, the scene of DhoddAchArya Sevai is enacted. The Archakas hide Lord Varadaraja for a few minutes
with two Umbrellas. After managalarthi, regular activities are continued
