Azhwars have done Managalasasanam for some Divya Desams very elaborately. For example all 11 Azhwars have sung in praise of Srirangam( Divya Desam 1), Ten Azhwars have sung in praise of Thiruvengadam ( Divya Desam 75) and Thiruparkadal ( Divya Desam 107). Managasasanam to as many as 67 Divydesams  was done by one of the eleven Azhwars only.

Mangalasasanam depending on how elaborate it is, covered the one or more of following aspects


  • 1      Name of Divya desam directly or in a subtle way

  • 2      Name of Emperuman directly or in a subtle way

  • 3     Manobhavam of Azhwar who composed the pasuram

  • 4      References to events , Leelas in Vibhava Avatars

  • 5     References to Para, Vyuha and Antharyami forms of  Sriman Narayana

  • 6      References to 26 Thatwams ( Paramatma, Jeevatma, Moola Prakruthi, Mahaan, Ahankaaram, Manasu, Kaalam, Five each of elements, attributes,  Indriyas and Senses)

  • 7      Divya Desa Vimana, Pushkarini etc

  • 8      Natural beauty of the Divya desam surroundings

The pasuram presented below is by Nammazhwar. 

Nammazhwar was known by the name of Maran from childhood. He was different from other children and pretty abnormal in day-to-day activities and his parents gave him the name Maran, indicating that he was unique and different from the children of his age.  Nammazhwar's parents tried everything under their control to get the child back to normal and ultimately surrendered to Athinatha perumal in Thirukurugoor and left the child under his care. The child moved on its own from Athinathar sannathi into a Tamarind tree in the temple complex and stayed there for 16 long years almost immobile. There was big transformation in Maran at the age of 16.

Nammazhwar composed and sang four prabhandhams namely Thiru Viruththam, Thiruvasiriyam, Peria Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvaaimozhi reflecting Rig, Yajur, Atharvana and Sama veda. These Divya Prabhandhams got the name Dravida Veda Sagaram because they were in Tamil and essence of corresponding Sanskrit Veda

In this Thiruvaaimozhi pasuram "
ஆரா அமுதே! அடியேன் உடலம் நின்பால் அன்பாயே  ", Nammazhwar performs Mangalasasanam to the Lord of Thirukkudanthai. Nammazhwar says " My Dear Lord!! My Insatiable sweet Nectar (ஆரா அமுதே) or even better ambrosia!.   When I think of you, my body assumes the form of deep rooted love for you and melts to liquid stage and gets tossed up and down. Oh Sarveshwara! I am indeed fortunate to have a darshan of your reclining pose on the hooded serpent, in Thirukkudanthai, where whisks of fertile and golden paddy fields seem to be offering fanning services to you. “  This pasuram, on the Lord of Thirukudanthai, turned out to be the catalyst for Sri Nathamunigal to pray to Nammazhwar to get back the lost treasure of Divya Prabhandham by reciting Kanninunsiruthambu 12000 times.
